HOSPITALITY: Major Increases In Visitation During World Cup
Recent Western Cape Business News
Visitation numbers of most attractions in Cape Town and the Western Cape skyrocketed in June 2010. This is according to Cape Town Routes Unlimited’s Quarter 2 Western Cape Tourism Barometer, which shows that although many attractions felt the effects of the off-peak tourism season in April and May, they reaped the benefits of the 2010 World Cup during June with visitation numbers increasing – in some cases dramatically.
The following visitor numbers of attractions illustrate this trend:
Table Mountain Aerial Cable Way showed a 16.7% overall quarterly increase and a June year-on-year increase of 68.9%
Agulhas Lighthouse experienced an overall quarter 2 increase of 9% and for June a 93.3% year-on-year increase (849 more visitors)
De Hoop Nature Reserve showed a 6.4% overall quarter 2 increase and a June year-on-year increase of 112% (433 more visitors)
Year-on-year visitations to the V&A Waterfront declined by 3.3% in quarter 2 but the year-on-year increase for June is 17.9% (270 555 more visitors)
Robben Island’s overall decline for quarter 2 is 7%, but the attraction has registered an astronomical June year-on-year increase of 81% (8671 more visitors)
While the Cango Caves experienced an overall quarterly decline of 2.7%, it showed a June year-on-year increase of 46.4 % (3003 more visitors)
Table Mountain Boulders’ visitations showed an overall quarter 2 decline of 1%, but a 54.6 % year-on-year increase in June (11 629 more visitors)
All Parks in the province displayed a significant increase in visitation figures
In addition, the V&A Waterfront showed a 4.8% year-on-year July increase, which resulted in 74 121 more visitors that month. Data for July on other attractions is being processed and will be released soon.
