The City of Cape Town is to consider the request from the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) for an additional R1.34 million per annum over the next four years for the installation of CCTV cameras to enhance visitor safety on the mountain.
During the bi-lateral meeting today (23 August 2007), Councillor Marian Nieuwoudt, Mayoral Committee Member for Planning and Environment, said: “The City has reaffirmed its commitment to the partnership between the various parties and will consider the provision of additional funds to the TMNP. If approved it will be done on a project basis which will allow the City to monitor the spending. ”
Not only will future funding be project based but the City will honour its commitment to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for residents, local and foreign visitors to City parks.
“The continued partnership with the TMNP is of critical importance as the City recognises the park as a valuable economic asset. Our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of residents and visitors to the park and other nature reserves. We acknowledge the negative impact that continued attacks are having on the local economy.
“Such expenditure will be part of a greater security plan for all nature reserves in the metropole. The establishment of a Table Mountain Neighbourhood Watch should also be considered,” she added.
The City acknowledges the role and responsibility of SAPS, Western Cape Provincial Government and volunteers in the communities.
