MARKETING: PEP Launches Free Text Service

PEPtxt is an initiative that will enable PEP’s existing and new customers to communicate with their friends and family in a relevant and contemporary manner.
PEP is South Africa’s biggest seller of both cellphone handsets and airtime, selling well over three million cellphone handsets a year and over 100 million airtime vouchers (or 650 every minute). PEP sells around three million minutes of airtime every day through its store network.
As part of the launch campaign for the new service, PEP is once again using the ‘Generations’ programme on SABC1 between early November and early December to tell its customer base about PEPtxt and to explain how to get and how use the free service. PEP was the first retailer to collaborate with South Africa’s most popular soap opera when, in 2007, it announced its re-branding on ‘Generations’; the campaign was exceptionally successful for PEP as a business and as a brand.
