CLAUS Tworeck is a mover and shaker in Cape tourism. Having purchased Hylton Ross Tours in 2002, he grew the total fleet from 8 to 68 in a period of a few years. His involvement in open top buses started in 2002 with the launch of two ‘Cape Town Explorer’ buses.

The birth of City Sightseeing brand soon followed in 2004. Growing bus businesses has been a consistent quality of Tworeck and he has managed to do this with City Sightseeing as well.

Tworeck’s aims are to make City Sightseeing Cape Town a sustainable business that represents a genuine city tour experience, converting sightseers into brand ambassadors for Cape Town. Fundamental to his thinking is that the industry should get locals too to experience the tourist offerings Cape Town has.

Tworeck has built up networks throughout the city, growing the business into a stand-alone entity. “A jetlag free destination for European travellers, a global value for money destination and great package deals with Cape Town partners is key to the business success,” he says.

“City Sightseeing Cape Town has achieved flagship global status,” says Tworeck. Cape Town is one of three cities around the world with a brand new fleet of City Sightseeing buses. In 2009 City Sightseeing Cape Town was awarded the ‘International City Sightseeing Operator of the Year’ in recognition of its innovation, customer service, overall brand experience and commitment to environmental sustainability. “City Sightseeing is a first world tourist transportation system that has proved that Cape Town operates on a first world standard,” he says.

City Sightseeing is reducing its carbon footprint significantly by expanding its fleet of buses with low-emission buses. Tworeck believes that 2010 is just the springboard for the local tourism industry right up to 2020. With the implementation of the new GPS triggered multilingual onboard language system, a trip around Cape Town makes the eager sightseer feel much closer to home.
